I first met Mike Allen about nine years ago. I worked at a major coal mining operation in Indonesia, and Mike came to site to deliver safety training to the management team. Mike trained us in the technique known as ASA, designed to address unsafe behaviour in the workplace via participation by management in “safety conversations” with employees. It was evident to me then that Mike was an outstanding safety trainer and motivator, and that the technique that he taught the team was a powerful tool for driving behavioural change throughout a workforce.

In 2004, I commenced employment as GM EHS at a large nickel mining and processing operation. My mandate was to assist the site in achieving a significant and sustainable reduction in injury rates. We developed several key programmes to meet this objective, but my first priority was a “safety conversation” programme developed and delivered by Mike. He came to our site on several occasions to train all Executives, General Managers and Managers in this technique. In 2008, we completed the year without a single disabling injury amongst more than 3,000 employees, a record for the site. This success can be attributed in part to the programme delivered by Mike.

Mike stands out as a safety professional due to his extensive hands-on experience as an engineer and line manager, his excellent communication skills, and his acute understanding of human behaviour. He delivers his training with passion and humour and invariably impresses all that attend, even those that have attended similar programs in the past. I look forward to the next opportunity to work with him.
